I found a beautiful widget to keep track of the current amount of bitcoin you have, how much that amount is worth and also how much one btc is currently worth.
It supports a lot of different currencies and it looks really cool.

The widget works for Vista and 7 users. I'm not sure if this works for windows 8, but you could give it a try.
